Bienvenido

What is the Bienvenido Program?

The Bienvenido (Welcome in English) program is a strengths-based mental health promotion program that aims to improve the emotional and behavioral health of new Hispanic immigrants by teaching them techniques to manage depression and homesickness, improve their self-esteem, and improve their overall communication skills.  

Who can attend the Bienvenido programs?

The Bienvenido program has two different curricula, one for adults and one for teens (middle & high school students).

The curriculum for adults is offered in different churches and local community centers within easy access of our community. Anyone is welcome to attend the adult program.

The curriculum for youth is offered at local community middle and high schools. The program is offered only to students who are pre-selected by the school.

How long are the classes?

Classes for adults are six weeks long, and each session is 2.5 hours long. Classes include Zumba sessions, as keeping a healthy mind and body are pillars of the program.

Classes for youth are nine weeks long, and each session is 45 minutes long. Classes are offered during the school day and by invitation only.

How much are the classes?

The classes are free of cost.

Somos Resilientes

What is the Somos Resilientes Program?

 The Somos Resilientes (“We are Resilient”) program, developed by NIHHC, is an educational mental health and substance abuse prevention program designed for newly arrived Hispanic immigrant students aged 12-20. The program focuses on promoting overall well-being—social, emotional, and physical—while addressing the impact of culture on learning. It aims to equip participants with positive techniques for managing life stressors in a new country and new school system, ultimately reducing the likelihood of substance use and other detrimental behaviors.

Who can attend the Somos Resilientes program?

The Somos Resilientes, (“We are Resilient”), program curriculum targets Hispanic youth who have recently immigrated to the United States and face language barriers and other cultural adaptation challenges. It is offered in local middle and high schools. The program is offered only to students who are preselected by the school.

How long are the classes?

Classes are nine (9) weeks long, and each session is 45 minutes long.

Classes are offered in Spanish during the school day and by invitation only.

How much are the classes?

The classes are free of cost. 

How can I register to attend the Somos Resilientes program?

Contact your school’s social worker, EL (English Learner) coordinator, or parent liaison and express your interest in participating in the program. The selection of students is determined by the school staff. School staff may contact our office at (574) 522-0966, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., to learn more about implementing the Somos Resilientes program at their school.

Vivamos a Plenitud

What is the Vivamos a Plenitud program?

Vivamos a Plenitud, which translates to Let’s Live to the Fullest in English, is an educational mental health and substance abuse prevention program developed by NIHHC, that aims to provide education and prevention strategies to Spanish-speaking immigrant adults to improve overall well-being (social, emotional, and physical). The program sessions are designed to create awareness and facilitate discussions about mental health, substance use disorder, culture, and risk factors such as stigma, domestic violence, and generational trauma to address physical and emotional well-being. 

Who can attend Vivamos a Plenitud?

The Vivamos a Plenitud (“Let’s Live to the Fullest”) program curriculum is designed for Hispanic adults who face language barriers and challenges in the adaptation and integration process to the culture in United States. The program is offered at various local churches and community centers, including NIHHC’s facilities. Any adult who identifies Spanish as their native language is welcome to attend. In addition, the program is offered in schools for parents and guardians of students participating in the Somos Resilientes (“We Are Resilient”) program.

How long are the classes?

Classes are four (4) weeks long, and each session is 2 hours long. They are generally offered at convenient times in the evening or on the weekend. Classes include exercise sessions, such as Zumba, as physical health supports mental health.

How much are the classes?

The classes are free of cost.

Healthy Hearts

What is the Healthy Hearts Program?

The Healthy Hearts program, developed by NIHHC, aims to prevent childhood obesity by teaching students in 4th through 6th grades about the heart and the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. It empowers students with the tools and knowledge needed to make healthier decisions and build healthy habits.

Who can attend the Healthy Hearts program?

The Heathy Hearts program curriculum is tailored for children in grades 4, 5, and 6. Classes are offered to all students in those grades (in English) in local elementary schools.

How long are the classes?

Classes for 4th graders are six (6) weeks long. Follow-up classes for 5th and 6th graders are three (3) weeks long. Each session is 45 minutes long. Classes are offered during the school day and are incorporated into the school’s curriculum for all students.   

How much are the classes?

The classes are free of cost. 

How can I register to attend the Healthy Hearts program?

Contact your school nurse, the parent liaison, or your child’s teacher and express your interest in participating in the program. School staff may contact our office at (574) 522-0966, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., to learn more about implementing the Healthy Hearts program at their school.

Por Tu Familia

What is the Por Tu Familia program?

The Por Tu Familia, (“For Your Family”), program teaches about risk factors associated with heart disease by promoting the self-management of healthy habits. Part of the program incorporates cooking demonstrations facilitated by a professional chef (e.g., a low-fat recipe for the cholesterol session or a low-sodium recipe for the blood pressure session) and exercise facilitated by Zumba or yoga instructors.

Who can attend the Por Tu Familia program?

The Por Tu Familia (“For Your Family”) program curriculum is geared toward adults and teens and available in Spanish and English. Classes are offered at the NIHHC offices, different churches and local community centers within easy access of our community and where they trust. In addition, the program is offered in schools to families of students participating in the Healthy Hearts program. Anyone is welcome to attend the Por Tu Familia program.

Classes are four (4) weeks long, and each session is 1.5 hours long. They are generally offered at convenient times in the evening or on the weekend. Classes include cooking demonstrations or nutrition activities and exercise sessions, such as Zumba or yoga.

Membership

What is a membership?

The NIHHC membership program is an opportunity for community members to support NIHHC. In exchange for a small annual donation, members receive a series of benefits, such as:

Access to services: health screenings
Exclusive content: Such as newsletters, information, or events.

 

How can I become a member of the NIHHC?

To become a member of NIHHC, click here  and complete the form to submit it online. For the membership payment, visit our membership payment page and make a payment with your credit card, or call NIHHC at (574) 522-0966, and someone will assist you in processing the payment by phone. You can also mail your check to our office.

What are the benefits of becoming a member of the NIHHC?

As a member, you will receive the following benefits for one year:

You will receive NIHHC’s quarterly newsletter, with the latest news on our most recent and upcoming programs, activities and events.  

You will be eligible for the following free health screenings twice a year at our NIHHC office: lipid profile, glucose, blood pressure, and body mass index. 

You will receive direct emails and/or text messages with invitations to our upcoming events and educational programs.

How much does it cost to become a member?

Individual membership is $20 annually. 

NIHHC offers four levels of corporate membership: bronze is $2,500 annually; silver is $5,000 annually; gold is $7,500 annually; and platinum is $10,000 annually.

Health Screenings

Does NIHHC provide health screenings?

Yes, NIHHC provides health screenings that are performed with a finger prick. Patients receive their results immediately. Patients also receive an explanation of their results, and if needed, a list of community sites where they can receive medical support to manage their health condition.

How much do you charge for the screenings offered at NIHHC’s office?

Health screenings are offered at no cost for NIHHC members. If you are not a member, screenings are offered at a very low costto cover the cost of the supplies used to perform the screenings.

Health Fairs

What is a health fair?

A health fair is a public event where NIHHC invites health care providers to volunteer their time to provide free health screenings, vaccines, and educational resources.

What kinds of health screenings and vaccines are offered at NIHHC’s health fairs?

The health screenings and vaccines offered depend on the provider or organization that accepts our invitation. There may be kidney tests, back to school vaccines, flu shots, lipid panel, A1C, cholesterol, and glucose, among others.

Are there interpreters or bilingual personnel at the NIHHC Health Fairs?

NIHHC has bilingual staff and volunteers at every health fair. Our goal is that you feel valued and heard in every interaction with a health care provider, leaving with clear recommendations for managing your condition. In fact, many of the providers are Spanish speakers.

Does the NIHHC provide clinical services?

No, but our bilingual Community Health Workers (CHWs) can refer you to affordable health care services in our area.

If I miss a health fair, can I obtain screenings later on?

Yes, you can call NIHHC to make an appointment for certain health screenings at the office. Call us at (574) 522-0966 to find out what services are available and the cost. If you are an NIHHC member, you have free health screening benefits annually.

If I plan to attend a Health Fair, should I fast?

Participants that want to have a lipid panel screening and/or glucose screening should fast for 12 hours. There are many other types of screenings that do not require fasting.

Is there any cost to the community to come to NIHHC’s health fairs?

All health screenings and vaccines are provided completely free of charge at NIHHC’s health fairs.

Other than health care providers, who else is present at NIHHC’s health fairs?

Several local businesses, banks, fitness clubs, insurance companies, and colleges may have booths at the events to offer information about their services. If you would like to purchase a booth or become a sponsor, contact NIHHC.
